The Copyright Link Left By Your Web Designer Is Tacky and Doesn’t Help
You’ve probably seen a copyright link at the bottom of your website or other websites on the web, giving credit back to the website design or development company. Get rid of it, it’s not necessary and hurts everyone involved. I get it, the designer wants a backlink and the owner doesn’t mind. Again, this hurts everyone involved.
When Google sees this link going out of your site, to something that has no correlation to what your website is about, it’s bad. Remember Google wants fresh relevant content. That being said, Google will see this link and question it. Is it a paid link? Is it manipulative in nature? Why is it just sitting here with no correlation?
In my opinion, do not do this. It looks bad, but Google will most likely ping both of you for doing it. In my 8 years of website design and development, I have never done this.
If it’s just absolutely necessary, put a nofollow attribute in it and you’ll be okay. But, again, a copyright link look tacky. Go to the bottom of this website, do you see a link?
If you don’t currently have a website designer, but you have a copyright link you’d like removed from your website, shoot me an email and I will gladly help you remove it.
